Tuesdays starting Sept. 14, Mex 1 Coastal Cantina in Mount Pleasant will hold an open mic night hosted by Lowcountry musician Danielle Howle.

Presented by Awendaw Green, the open mic Tuesdays will be formatted similar to Chico Feo’s Soapbox, where participants play only original singer-songwriter material.

The open mics are from 6 to 9 p.m., and each artist gets 15 minutes or four songs.

Local singer-songwriter Fleming Moore spent a lot of time with Howle at her former open mic night Holy City Confessionals at Hometown BBQ in West Ashley. Moore has a catalog of over 40 originals.

“I’ve been writing since I can remember,” he said.

“I love doing open mics because when you write a song, you never know how it’s going to fall until you perform it live in front of someone,” he said. “It gives you a forum. It gives you the opportunity to flesh some things out that might not be working in the song without being too critical. It’s a place you should take a risk and not be worried about judgment.”
