[image-1]With pizza, pub fare, and French cuisine all available inside Freshfields Village, the only thing missing was some solid queso and salt-rimmed margs. Well, now you can visit the gateway to Kiawah and hit independently owned S.C. chain Cantina 76.

The Mexican-inspired taqueria opened its doors this Mon. Oct 2 at 219 Freshfields Drive; this is the fourth Cantina 76 location, with two in Columbia and one in Greenville. Owners Jeb Babcock, Chad Elsey (a Johns Island native), Rob Ward, and Craig Wyatt were ready to bring the brand to the Lowcountry: Ward says the “upbeat yet casual atmosphere at Cantina 76 will make a smooth transition into the area.”

Cantina 76 will serve tacos, salads, soups, quesadillas, enchiladas, chimichangas, nachos, and desserts, and will offer a full bar. According to a Cantina press release, some popular menu items include the Peruvian shrimp taco, made with wild caught Gulf shrimp; jalapeno coleslaw with a sweet sesame chili drizzle; made to order margaritas with ingredients including agave nectar, fresh lime juice, mint, muddled strawberries, and basil; and the “dirty queso,” a mix of refried beans, roasted chicken, red chili sauce, queso, pico de gallo, sour cream, and a sriracha drizzle. Elsey says the “fresh, simple and creative taco combinations have performed well across the state.” 

The space will feature indoor and outdoor seating and a bar area in a “laid-back and inviting atmosphere.” The Cantina will be open Sun.-Tues. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Weds. and Thurs. 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Fri. and Sat. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
