Forget the iPhone 6 craze. Today is the day local restaurant watchers have been waiting for. At 4 p.m. Sean Brock’s new Mexican taqueria Minero (155 East Bay St.) will open. Given the anticipation, we assume taco lovers already have their beach chairs set up and are queuing along East Bay St. in hopes of snagging the first chilaquiles or hotdog confit and deli ham torta. (Should we pull straws to see who has to break the news to the soon-to-be-opened King St. Chipotle? Yikes.)  

First the good news, Brock must have taken our DISH Taco Trend story to heart as he’s kept the prices of his tacos within the median of our list. You can grab a Pork Carnitas Taco for $3.5 or Fried Whiting Taco for $4. It’s items like the Charcoal Grilled Chicken Wings doused with Valentina ($8), Sloppy Jose Torta ($9), and Minero Burrito ($9) that’ll cost you more.

According to the website, perfectionist Brock spent ages getting the restaurant’s tortillas just right. “The Minero team tasted over 40 varieties of corn, before choosing their three favorites from three different producers: Masienda, Geechie Boy Mill, and Anson Mills. Brock calls learning to make tortillas one of the hardest things he’s ever done.” The site promises the Minero team will grind the corn twice a day “using a traditional nixtamalization process to make fresh masa.” 

The bad news: we see no chapulines on the menu. 

As for the drinks, McCrady’s beverage manager and advanced sommelier, Cappie Peete has taken the reigns. She’ll feature “an extensive tequila and mescal selection, a small unique wine list, beer, and cocktails inspired by the flavors of Mexico.”

The name Minero — which CP broke the news of back in July —  translates to “miners,” and was apparently selected as Mexican miners used to wrap their explosives in paper and called them tacos. Minero joins Neighborhood Dining Group’s McCrady’s, Husk, Husk Nashville, and Chicago’s Steak and Seafood in Roswell, GA. 

Minero hours this weekend are 4 p.m. to midnight. Beginning next week, the restaurant will be open Sun.-Thurs., 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Fri.-Sat. 11 a.m. to midnight.
