The guys responsible for Record Store Day (RSD) want to keep the indie record store love flowing year-round, which is why this Black Friday, Fri. Nov. 27, will feature new releases from 120 artists, including the B52s, Beck, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, Jesus and Mary Chain, Megadeth, the Kinks, the Sonics, and Spoon.
Monster Music & Movies (946 Orleans Road) will have many exclusive RSD releases in-store as well as a storewide sale, like 20-percent off all new CDs, DVDs, and vinyl (excluding exclusive releases); 40-percent off tees, posters, toys, and more; and 50-percent off all used vinyl, CDs, and DVDs until noon and 25-percent off after noon. Gift certificates will also be on sale for 20-percent off.
With more and more stores offering the big discounts in the days preceding Black Friday, Monster’s Galen Hudson hopes shoppers will be encouraged to brave the traffic.
“We try really hard to make the record store a destination, someplace that’s fun to shop in, hang out in, meet new people, and learn about new music,” Monster’s owner Galen Hudson says. “We’re pretty busy on Black Friday, but it’s not a knock-’em-down zoo. We hope people make the trip out here and see for themselves what the record store experience is all about.”

While downtown’s new indie record store, the Vinyl Countdown (724 King St.), wasn’t able to order any RSD releases in time, owner Aaron Levy promises plenty of “deep discounts” on Black Friday.
