In 2013 Brian Piesner had the idea to turn an International Harvester truck into a mobile pizza oven. He called it Coastal Crust and it quickly turned into a catering win for weddings and parties. He later added a beverage truck serving beer, wine, and locally roasted King Bean espresso. Now the former Charleston Battery player is hoping to score again with Vintage Coffee Cafe, his new restaurant and coffee shop at 219 Simmons St. in Mt. Pleasant.
“We’ll be serving cafe style food like egg sandwiches, French toast, and small plates in the evenings like meat and cheese boards,” he says. The restaurant will be open Mon.-Thurs. for breakfast and lunch, and Thurs.-Sat. until 10 p.m. with brunch on Sundays.
Vintage Coffee Cafe sits right across the street from the Moultrie Plaza Shopping Center on Coleman, where Bottles and Wild Wings are located. The former home will seat 18 inside with a large backyard patio out back.
Piesner says he wanted to create a place accessible to singles and families alike, where people could get the kind of food they might find at Butcher & Bee but in an atmosphere with room for kids to run around, thus the patio where his trucks will occasionally set up shop serving gelato and Neapolitan pies. “On Coleman Boulevard there really isn’t a place like that,” he says.
Piesner is completing the remodel of the building and hopes to have Vintage Coffee Cafe open by June.
