I’m not much of one for horn tooting, but in the Web 2.0 world the Lowbrow’s natural modesty is sorely tested by a pathological, even primeval, craving for page views. So I’ll out with it, though I do so – and I want this on the record – only under severe arm-twisting from my Id: Last year’s Spoleto Buzz blog has been named one of three national finalists for Best Blog among members of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. At the upper end of the register, AAN members include papers like the Village Voice and the Chicago Reader. At the other end – in the 60,000 circulation and under end – lie papers like Spoleto Buzz owner the City Paper, the Portland Mercury, and the Arkansas Times, with which this blog shares the nom.

The final word comes down at this year’s AAN national conference June 14-16 in Portland, by which time Spoleto Festival 2007 will be recent history and the Lowbrow will be sipping a boat drink somewhere warm and sandy, not paying any attention to anything remotely connected with blogging or hoity-toity arts festivals. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit pleased. In any event, and at the risk of sounding like a preening Oscar also-ran, I will say it’s obviously an honor merely to have been recognized. I couldn’t have done it without you. Or maybe I could have, I don’t even know you.

Back to matters of the moment: I’m off to this year’s new podcast studio – otherwise known as Chez Matt and Evan Bivins – to lay down this year’s Buzzcast #1, an interview with Jonny Panick and Kurt Nihilist, the chief impresarios behind local music/theatre act Cabaret Kiki. (Yes, they’re also the owners of the house. I never claimed this was all squeaky clean. Deal with it.)
