U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the former S.C. governor and Bamberg native, will appear on the cover of Time Magazine’s Sept. 18 issue. The cover story, titled ‘Firsts,’ looks at pioneering women across a variety of fields including Haley, Oprah, Hillary Clinton, musician Selena Gomez, tennis player Serena Williams, and more. Haley is identified as “The First Indian-American woman to be elected governor.”
In a short interview with the magazine, Ambassador Haley told Time of the alienation she felt coming from the only Indian-American family in small town Bamberg, S.C., a perspective she has drawn on while in political office and which she says continues to inform her outlook on the world stage.
“Things happen in your life that change you and challenge you, and they’re uncomfortable, but when you get through them, you realize that they are the reason you are the way that you are,” she told Time.
