I had an errand to run at the College of Charleston and saw things are getting set up for performances at the Cistern, the college’s awesome outdoor stage. Noche Flamenca dances there. Some of jazzers are going to play there. I reported earlier today that Wachovia has pulled out as a named sponsor of the Spoleto Jazz Series (the bank is still a sponsor). Speculation is that the Charlotte-based corporation wanted its name taken off the series, because it had taken billions in federal bail out money and wanted to avoid the appearance of taking taxpayer dollars while at the same time giving some of it to the arts. Even so, as I walked through the Cistern today, I notice some stickers on the backs of chair. The stickers indicates the seat number. There is a sponsor of those stickers. It is Wachovia Bank. Timing is everything. This time, it’s not so good. -JS
