Charleston’s hip-hop fans welcomed New Orleans rapper Curren$y to his first ever show in the Palmetto State Saturday. DJ D-Dubb got things started with his turntable stylings, followed by Pineville native Benjamin Starr, who spit a couple of songs from his recently released LP The Experience.
Then Charleston’s own Righchus, fresh off a tour with Wiz Khalifa, took the stage backed by DJ RDot. He ripped into his set with songs from his Chaos Theory album as well as new tracks from his upcoming mixtape release with famed West Coast DJs Ill Will and Rockstar. He even made time during his set to share the stage with Starr to perform their “Grinding Music,” in which the Carolina MCs traded bars over a sped-up Jimi Hendrix sample. Fellow S.C. rapper Streets rounded out the opening acts.
The headliner was as entertaining and charismatic as he seems on his many internet-released music videos. The former Cash Money Records affiliate and leader of The Fly Society scrolled through his musical catalog with the greatest of ease, hitting some of his most popular tracks like “Modern Day Hippie” and “Roll My Shit,” featured on the mixtape Fast Times at Ridgemount Fly.
Thanks to Nightvizzion and Phlayva Entertainment, you can add Charleston to the list of places Curren$y has been. JETS, fool.
