South of Broadway Theatre is getting another theater group, more evidence that North Charleston is really turning into a place where the performing arts happen.

Contemporary Theatre Lab, headed up by Mark Gorman, aims to bring works for the stage to life that would normally languish in workshop hell. It has already held auditions for its first production, Season 2 Season, a story about the life of abstract expressionist painter, Jackson Pollack.

The auditions were part of the mass casting call that took place Jan. 17-18 in which acting hopefuls tried out for project on film and stage. More than 125 people showed up, giving Gorman hope that he might someday develop a company in which every show features new faces.

Contemporary Theatre Lab is the last theater group to sign up with South of Broadway Theatre. A newly revived Theatre RE/verv/ plans to mount a four-show season starting next fall. And Deuce Theatre aims to produce more shows there in the coming months.
