Mouzon Taylor muddled up a slew of his signature Mouzon Mashes for the City Paper’s Nosh Mob last night. The tasting at Charleston Place was tied to the release of the Winter 2010 issue of Dish, and a bourbon-and-whiskey-loving crowd sampled Old-Fashioneds, Manhattans, and the aforementioned Mashes, which were mixed up by Taylor, the Thoroughbred Club’s mixologist, and Charleston Grill bartender Jason Hall.
The two shared insights into the flavor profiles, and Taylor got a chance to talk to the group about his passion for Kentucky Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey, which is also featured in a Dish story on the topic by Stratton Lawrence.
Taylor said the creation of Mouzon Mash actually belongs to his grandfather, a peach farmer from Cross, S.C., who would take fruit from his orchard and mix it up with Wild Turkey 101. For his more refined version, Taylor prefers to use Gentleman Jack. “The charcoal filtration adds to the smokiness of the drink.”
Both Taylor and Hall said they are seeing a lot more requests for classic cocktails like the Old-Fashioned and the Manhattan, and they mixed samples for guests to try, explaining the ingredients and process as they went along.
Nosh Mobbers also got to sip Woodford Reserve and Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection from etched glasses that served as souvenirs of the event.
Charleston Grill’s General Manager Mickey Bakst and Charleston Place Food + Bev Manager Nathan Foster were instrumental in putting this tasting together, as was Kelly Scott of Brown-Forman, who supplied all the booze (thanks guys!).
Bakst is in the midst of planning a charity walk to raise money for Water Missions International and was seen chatting with co-planner and dedicated Nosh Mobber Archie Burkell of the Hat Ladies. He was also generous enough to expand the amazing Nosh Mob deal — 50 percent off food and 15 percent off drinks at the Thorougbred Club — to the Charleston Grill. At 7 p.m., groups started drifting towards the Club and the Grill to take advantage of the savings and enjoy the smooth sounds of Quentin Baxter and friends.
