New Disc: Number One Contender
It has been long in the works — local rock quintet Number One Contender’s new studio album Closer — a follow-up to their debut disc The Album. The band worked with local studio producer Eric Bass (of Shinedown) for several months at Ocean Industries Studio, then mixed 10 songs with Grammy award-winning producer/mixer Skidd Mills and mastered the album with engineer Brad Blackwood. The final result is a well-polished and aggressive collection set for independent release this month. The band — lead vocalist Reid Johnson, guitarists Alan Price and Damon Jackson, bassist Jonathan Holt, and drummer Paul Huck — have a big CD release show planned at the Music Farm for Sat. Loki Festival 2008

Meyer & Thile at Music Hall
Bluegrass fans should be delighted to see upright bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile. The pair are scheduled for a concert at the Charleston Music Hall on Fri. Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. as the City Paper and The Bridge at 105.5 present “An Evening with” the two string players. Thile is best known as mandolinist and vocalist for the acoustic trio Nickel Creek. Meyer, a versatile musician of many styles, is recognized for his work with Béla Fleck, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, and Nickel Creek, among many other diverse acts. Nonesuch Records recently issued a self-titled, 12-song Meyer & Thile album, replete with a 50-minute DVD. Tickets are available for $30 in advance and $35 day-of-show. ROCKTOBERFEST
IN AWENDAW
Awendaw Green, the new East Cooper outdoor music venue located on Highway 17 in Awendaw (just past the Seewee Outpost, next to Hidden Ponds Nursery) announced their official lineup for a two-day Rocktoberfest concert and chili cook-off. Over 30 local and regional bands (check the Music Board listings for updates) will perform to raise money benefiting the Wando High School band program. The festival kicks off on Sat. Last week, acoustic rock/folk duo Rene Russell (guitar and vocals) and Gary Hewitt (upright bass and vocals) — they normally play weekends at Morgan Creek Grill on the IOP — kicked off a weekly series of Thursday evening shows across the Waterway at East Cooper bistro Crave Kitchen & Cocktails (1968 Riviera Drive, 843-884-1177).
