A resolution inviting President-elect Barack Obama to speak to the General Assembly will be introduced by House Speaker Bobby Harrell (an avid McCain supporter) among others.

The resolution … is designed to offer the new president a platform to highlight his campaign theme of moving the country forward on a bi-partisan political basis, lawmakers said.

South Carolina, a “Red State” voted for McCain in the general election and GOP primary last year, but went heavily for Obama, who is to be sworn into office next week, in the 2008 Democratic Primary

The General Assembly extended a similar invitation to President George W. Bush, who addressed a joint session of the Legislature.

In his new book, How Barack Obama Won, NBC Political Director Chuck Todd says that Obama could target South Carolina among a collection of Southern states in his 2012 reelection campaign.
