Local microbrewery Palmetto Brewing Co. has a new seasonal ready for release. The Spring Extra Pale IPA — the fourth ale in their Bocat specialty series — is a golden-colored India Pale Ale brewed with traditionally prepared Marris Otter Pale Malt (from Warminster Malting of Wales) and a new hop varietal known as Falconers’ Flight.
Chris Winn, the director of marketing, sales, and events for Palmetto Brewing Co., dropped by he City Paper office this week with a freshly-bottled sample of the new ale. We found the Spring Extra Pale IPA (6.5 percent a.b.v.) to be medium-bodied, crystal-clear, brilliantly golden, and delicately balanced. The pale malt was prevalent enough to hold up to the citrusy, grassy flavors and aromas of the Falconers’ Flight hops. Hints of tangerine, pineapple, and grapefruit came through in the initial taste and smooth finish. Co-cowner and head brewer Ed Falkenstein devised he recipe.
Following last fall’s very hoppy Hop Harvest IPA, the Spring Extra Pale IPA is Palmetto’s second IPA in the limited-release Bocat series, which benefits the Charleston Animal Society. A portion of the sales from every six-pack goes directly to the ASPCA as a donation from the Palmetto Brewing Co.
Palmetto hosts a kick-off for the Spring Extra Pale IPA with a free tasting at Charleston Beer Exchange on Tues. May 10 at 5 p.m. The shop is devoting its weekly Rare Beer Tuesday slot to the beer, offering growlers at a nice price and free samples. Winn will be on hand from 5-6 p.m. to discuss the beer and answer questions (see video below for more).
