Photos: Going Gaga in Marion Square

With almost 2,000 confirmed guests on Facebook alone, knowledge of the Lady Gaga Day in the Square spread through Charleston faster than Kanye could ever ruin his reputation.

The idea for this event was inspired by the movie 500 Days of Summer. It all began when Joe Quinn and his four friends were watching the movie in his King Street apartment, “We just thought it would be so cool for everyone to break out in fun song and dance like in the movie,” says co-creator Mikayla Carr, “We didn’t realize it would get this big.”

The flash Gaga event ran for only 30 minutes in Marion Square, but the makeshift dance floor was completely filled within the first 15. What made this event even better were the thousands of dollars it raised for Haiti relief through donations made directly to the American Red Cross. Donation bins and tins were passed around throughout the dance floor, and T-shirts were being sold for $10, will all of the proceeds donated to the cause.

As for the Lady Gaga theme, Carr explains, “We all love Lady Gaga and couldn’t imagine a greater and more exciting theme.”
