Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst were welcomed home with a two-night sold-out run at the Charleston Music Hall this past weekend. Missed out on these shows? You can catch the duo at the Groundhog Day Benefit Concert on Feb. 1.
It only took a few songs before Trent cut his hand while drumming and was bleeding. “That’s how you know you’re at a Shovels & Rope show,” quipped Hearst.
Shovels & Rope continue to grow their fanbase by touring hard and riding on strong, dynamic, and, most of all, fun live performances. The Music Hall shows were no different. Raw, sweaty, and bloody. They played through most of their acclaimed 2012 release O’ Be Joyful. While both shows saw similar setlists, the husband-and-wife duo mixed it up by dropping in tunes like the title track off Trent’s 2010 solo album The Winner and a few of Hearsts’s solo efforts including, “The Thread,” and “1200 Miles.”
Over the course of two nights, audiences were also treated to a couple of new tunes that the band has been road testing over the past few months, as well as a Tom Waits cover, “Bad As Me.” Hearst and Trent expressed gratitude towards their Charleston fans during both shows. Hearst even joked about having to play well because they have to see everyone at BI-LO.
Austin, TX one-man-band, Shakey Graves opened both nights with his gritty, non-linear, folk rock.
