Police receive complaints of razor blades, drug paraphernalia in Tiedemann Park

According to a June 20 police incident report, Charleston police have recently been receiving “complaints of razor blades and drug paraphernalia being located within the play area” at Tiedemann Park in downtown Charleston.

One person told police that “there was a belief individuals were entering the park at night and leaving those items only to be located by children in the morning,” according to the report. To investigate that claim, one police officer entered the park, located at 40 Elizabeth St., at around 1:20 a.m. to search the play area with a flashlight. The officer found a man and woman sitting at the top of the playground equipment with two 40-oz. bottles of beer. The officer noted that the man had his pants unzipped, but he was not exposed.

When the cop explained the complaints about the paraphernalia being found on the playground and told the pair that the park closed at 11 p.m., they said that they “agreed their behavior was inappropriate but did not know the park closed at 2300 hrs,” according to the report.

The man and woman were both given tickets for open container violations.
