Eric Hunter has a lot to say about his show “Stand-Up Showdown,” part of Piccolo Spoleto’s Piccolo Fringe series. But the most important thing to note is that it’s not, in fact, a showdown. Yes, there will be two comedians doing their best to please the crowd. But there won’t be any voting, no victors, and no one will be voted off the island … er, peninsula.

You can think of it more as a showcase, a chance for two talented comedians to provide audiences with some good, clean fun from two stand-up comics, something Hunter notes is in short supply in the Lowcountry.

“It’s fairly rare in Charleston,” Hunter said of stand-up shows. “I know there’s a lot of improv, but this will be some good, ol’ fashioned stand up.”

In Hunter’s show, he talks about his family, sports, being Irish Catholic, and such. There’s no laborious recounting of that awful night of sex or that crazy drunken night that ended in a prison cell.

“I don’t have a criminal background I can joke about,” he says. “I’m a goofy, friendly guy in real life and that translates to the stage.”

There’s no shtick to Hunter’s act (no strange accent, clever props, or puppets), but he will be wearing the same shirt each night.

“I only have one shirt,” he says, though assuring us that he washes it every day.

Hunter gives the show a PG rating.

“It’s an act a teenager and their 100-year-old great grandmother can come out to and neither be offended nor grossed out,” he says.

But just because there’s no dirty jokes or crass language doesn’t mean the audience won’t have a good time.

“It’s pretty silly,” Hunter says of his act. “When I put a title on it, I say it’s ‘Around-the-Corner Comedy.’ I try to take the audience on a different route to the punchline.”

While Hunter will headline three of the shows, he’ll take second billing for the other three shows. He says all of the comedians performing in the shows have had years of experience in stand-up.
