52.5 Reaches 11
52.5 Records reached its 11th birthday last week. The local independent record shop opened its doors for the first time on February 21, 1997 at a small space at 52 1/2 Wentworth St. In 2000, the shop moved down to a location at 75 Wentworth St., just a block off of King Street. Proprietor Clay Scales reopened at his third location on Upper King (the old Peggy Dress Shop at 561 King St.) early last year. Wilco: Postponed
Just announced over the weekend: in order to zip up to N.Y. for a last-minute booking on Saturday Night Live on Sat. March 1, Wilco have postponed their concert scheduled for Fri. Feb. 29 at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. They will play a make-up show on Aug. 7. All tickets previously purchased will be honored for the rescheduled date. Refunds will be available from points of purchase. Jeff Tweedy and the gang will share the spotlight with Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (of Juno). Black Expo 2008
The 9th Annual Black Expo — co-sponsored by the local paper Black Pages — kicks off a full weekend of seminars and presentation next weekend. One highlight is sure to be the Old-School Hip-Hop Concert scheduled for Fri. March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Gaillard Auditorium (77 Calhoun St.). The lineup features Doug. E. Kinney Comin’ Round
Longtime Charleston favorite Kevin Kinney (singer/guitarist of the rock band drivin’ n’ cryin’) visits the IOP for a solo show at the Windjammer on Fri. Feb. 29. The songwriter recently toured with a backing band called the Sun Tangled Angel Revival. His sixth solo album, Comin’ Round Again, is a twangy, 11-song collection released on the Dutch label Rosa. Asheville-based folk/pop/alternative singer/guitarist Tim Scroggs opens in support of a new album titled Critic No More. Tickets are $12 ($10 adv.).
