Today Planet Smoothie (431 King St.), that long-standing bastion of pureed fruits, closes its doors. Manager Marlon Westbury says he believes the closure is due to increased rent. Post & Courier‘s Warren Wise reports that Republic Ice Cream will take over the space pending a closing. The Myrtle Beach-based shop is 96 years old and sells flavors like Island Vanilla and Homestyle Cookies and Cream.
Co, 340 King St.’s Vietnamese-meets-Asian-fusion restaurant, is branching out and opening another location in Savannah. The new restaurant at 10 Whitaker St. will be a mash-up of Co’s Charleston offerings along with the brand’s Myrtle Beach Co Sushi staples. “We get to take our most popular dishes from both locations, plus one of the best $4 happy hours that our customers in Charleston and Myrtle Beach love, and bring it to Savannah,” says owner Greg Bauer. Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint has announced it will open at 1795 N. Hwy. 17 in Mt. Pleasant. Maddio’s will let “guests order their own personalized pizza from a chef’s special or create your own; watch it being cooked; get a drink and sit down; and a server brings it to your table in less than 10 minutes,” says a press release. This will be the first of three Uncle Maddio’s in Charleston, and a grand opening celebration for Maddio uno will take place Sat. Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include free pizza.
And just to clarify, King Street is not getting its own Ms. Rose’s (1090 Sam Rittenberg Blvd). This morning, a tweet from Charleston Daily suggested that the West Ashley restaurant was opening a second location across from Charleston Distillery Co., but the restaurant has denied that information. Ms. Rose’s owner, Anita Zucker, is opening 492 on King Street, perhaps that’s where the confusion began.
