Like everybody else, we thought Friday’s debate was pretty ho-hum. It looked like McCain got the ever important clip-worthy zingers, but nearly all post-debate polling suggests Obama won the night. As Richard Todd suggested this morning on WTMA 1250, the debate really goes to Obama because a debate on foreign affairs should have easily gone to McCain. If it didn’t, that means that his trump card has lost a lot of its luster.

Now attention turns to Sarah Palin. On Friday, we were saying that she either can’t show up on Thursday night, or she can’t survive Thursday night. It looks like she will show up Thursday night (unless she suspends her campaign to address the storm heading toward Canada, since you can see Canada from her state).

The pressure cannot be higher for Palin. McCain proved with his last-minute attendance at Friday’s debate that he actually can see when he’s made a dangerous mistake and correct the course of the campaign. If Palin is anywhere near as horrible Thursday as she was during the Couric interviews, he’s got to abandon her and find a replacement (though it would certainly be Palin walking away to spend more time with her family).

Our advice for Joe Biden: Don’t look at her. Don’t talk to her. Pull a McCain and act like she’s not even there. The slightest engagement from this gruff old Pennsylvania boy is going to translate to an attack on the poor, helpless Palin. Talk about McCain. Talk about failed Bush policies. And let Palin hang herself.
