[embed-2]Raven Saunders fans gathered at Burke High School auditorium Friday morning to see the Olympian qualify for finals in women’s shot put. The Burke alum and Lowcountry native proved once again that she is one of the world’s greatest athletes in her field, qualifying fourth with a throw of 18.83 meters.

Burke High School will open its doors again Friday night at 7:45 p.m. for a watch party to see the final round of competition, which is set to begin at 9 p.m. Ever the focused athlete, Saunders has gone radio silent during competition.

As you may have noticed recently, we here at the City Paper are psyched about the Summer Games in Rio and Saunders’ accomplishments so much so that we attempted to measure her longest throws in terms all Charlestonians can understand. Feel free to check that out, and prepare yourself for tonight’s shot-put finals. I’ll be the guy there dressed as Uncle Sam riding a bald eagle over a flaming mountain of apple pies and Big Macs.
