Garden & Gun Magazine released its second annual Made In the South Awards issue this week. The idea is to recognize and celebrate the unique, artisanal creations of the South, focusing on sporting, home, fashion, and food products.

In the food category, Charleston Bold & Spicy Bloody Mary Mix was given top honors. Ryan Eleuteri created the mix last year after he couldn’t find Zing Zang on the shelves at his grocery store. The mixture, which has been improved since it first launched last year, uses a beef and vegetable base to build rich depth and habañero mash to spice it up.

Guest judge Sean Brock is quoted as saying, “As soon as I tasted the mix, I could taste the hard work that went into developing the flavor.”

In related news, COAST Brewing Co. has been named a finalist in the Second Annual Good Food Awards. Last year, Cypress won an award for its Cypressata charcuterie and is a finalist again this year.

COAST entered its 32/50 Kolsch and HopArt IPA brews. They’re in great company, too, with Brooklyn Brewery, The Bruery, New Belgium, Victory, and Smuttynose also making the finals. Winners will be announced Jan. 13, 2012.
