America’s biggest volleyball stars head to Charleston this weekend for the inaugural AVP Charleston Open, with Misty May and Kerry Walsh (Gold Medal winners at the 2004 Olympics in Athens) and Karch Kiraly (widely recognized as one of the best volleyballers in the world) hitting the trucked-in sand covering the tennis courts at the Family Circle Tennis Center. And in case sitting in the bleachers gets a little too toasty, you can cool off at the XBox tent, the Wilson tent, or even get your (sweaty) hair did at the Paul Mitchell tent. The qualifying rounds begin Thursday morning, with matches taking place throughout the day and into the evening on Fri. and Sat., culminating in the final rounds on Sunday afternoon, with the women’s final at 2:30 and the men’s at 4. The Gibbes serves up another family-friendly, SunTrust-sponsored Community Day this weekend, where mothers, fathers, grandparents, toddlers, and even tweens can visit the Meeting Street institution for free. Although admission is free all day, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Gibbes hosts events including guided tours of the new Rodin exhibit, In His Own Words, a quilting circle (that one’s for Grandma), and live jazz and blues courtesy of red-hot local vocalists Leah Suarez (Toca Toca) and Ann Caldwell. If you avoided Meeting Street like the plague during the Spoleto insanity, now’s the time to get back downtown and visit the Lowcountry’s only fine-art museum. SATURDAY

On Wed. night, the nonprofit Coastal Conservation League hosts a party for the planet open to anyone who’s curious about how they, as individuals or couples, can help. Although eco-conservativism is not a new issue, especially here in the Lowcountry where we’re literally surrounded by nature on all sides, it’s been thrust into the public consciousness more than ever recently by “green” bands and popular films like Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. The CCL’s aim is to make taking steps to improve the world easy and to involve the community on as many levels as possible. In that spirit, they’re throwing a bash for “young professionals” at the eco-friendly Noisette space complete with music from local reggae band Mystic Vibrations, barbecue by the Sewee Outpost, and beer courtesy of Carolina brewers Palmetto Brewery. It’s perfect for anyone who’s new to town or who just wants to know more about why green is this season’s (and every season’s) hottest color. WEDNESDAY

For one weekend per year, the Charleston County Friends of the Library book sale lays out table after table and cart after cart of reading material prime for the grabbing. And these aren’t just musty old copies of Hard Times; many of the gently-used works are recently released best-sellers, so if you held off on buying that latest Michael Crichton or John Grisham, the CCPL’s ready to hand over their old copies.
