[image-1]Yesterday volunteers began painting over Redux’s current mural, begging the question: What’s next? Stacy Huggins, Redux’s executive director, filled us in on the details.
The mural, expected to be complete by next Friday, is being painted by Tripp Derrick Barnes, a Columbia, S.C. native who currently lives in New York. A graduate of SCAD, Barnes originally moved to NYC to work on films like The Dark Knight and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He’s done portraits for celebs like Matthew McConaughey, Susan Sarandon, and TV host Andy Cohen.
Barnes contacted Huggins, asking if he could paint a new mural for Redux. His idea is coming to fruition as we speak, with his trademark vibrant “pop neoism” serving as the background for a portrait of Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney. The mural will also feature images of a palm tree and dove, inspired by Gil Shuler’s design.
Stay tuned for more details on the mural’s unveiling. Check out more of Barnes’ work here.
