[image-1] As the RiverDogs open up their season this weekend, they’re unveiling a few new food and drink offerings at the Joe including a new ballpark exclusive beer from Rusty Bull Brewing.
This season, RiverDogs patrons will find a fried green tomato pimento grilled cheese, a chicken and waffle bowl, a “dogbone” rib bowl, and smothered fries topped with mac and cheese. On the lighter side of things, the R’Dogs are also offering vegetarian Beyond sausage (from the makers of the Beyond burger) and nachos loaded with hummus, guac, and other fresh ingredients.
As part of the park’s new Bowls and Strikes stand, fans will find options constructed inside a cardboard “doggie dish” that sounds silly, but could actually work pretty well. Bowls and Strikes is where you’ll find the chicken and waffles bowl, the new Dog Bone rib bowl with baked beans, and options to create your own bowl. (Spoiler alert: these are a little heavier, topping choices include potatoes and gravy and mac and cheese.)
[image-3] Following up last season’s Beyond burger, the Joe will feature a vegetarian Beyond sausage this year served up with corn relish or peppers and onions. Find the Beyond sausage at Dog World on the first base line concourse.
[image-4] If the faux sausage isn’t your style, check this year’s “Mediterranean Healthy Nachos.” Served in a souvenir RiverDogs batting helmet, you’ll find blue corn chips topped with hummus, guac, pico, olives, and feta.
Wrapping up the food offerings with a little Southern flavor, you’ll find the fried green tomato and pimento grilled cheese (served at the Scoops stand) and the “Smokehouse Fries,” a handful of slightly crispy steak fries topped with mac and cheese, jalapenos, bacon, and crispy onions drizzled with barbecue sauce.
[image-2] On the drink side of things, the Dogs are bringing back their annual take on a Naturdays beer milkshake using Natural Light’s new strawberry lemonade beer. Naturdays are already pretty light (4.2 percent abv), and when combined with sweet ice cream, the bite of the fruit is still present, but you’re mostly going for the “shake” part here.
The Joe has carried local craft beer for years, but this year they’ve enlisted Rusty Bull Brewing Co. out of North Charleston to make a special beer just for the Joe. Rusty Bull’s Bellyitcher Ale is a light and refreshing blonde ale at 4.8 percent ABV that pours bright with slightly sweet flavors. Grab a pint can for $6 at least just to get a look at the great illustrated label.
You’ll only find Bellyitcher at the Joe for now, but the guys at Rusty Bull say it may hit wider distribution at some point.
