We heard rumors that Robert’s of Charleston was closing, but according to Chef MariElena Raya, her dad Robert Dickson will probably not retire until late next year, when the restaurant’s lease comes up in a year and a half.

“It’s not official, but he’s probably going to be ready to retire and we’re looking at that as the end date.”

MariElena and her husband Joseph, who’ve been running the kitchen and the front of the house respectively, will — if they stay in that space — create a new concept, since it doesn’t work as Robert’s without Robert performing Italian arias and Broadway tunes. “We tried having guest singers when [Robert] was out for his surgery, but our guests weren’t receptive to that.”

So, perhaps this is the year to book that anniversary/birthday/special occasion at Robert’s if you’ve been meaning to but haven’t gotten around to it. This legendary little spot isn’t going to be there forever.
