Missing white girl syndrome.

If you are a news junkie, a blog huffer, or a Twitter tweaker, you’ve heard the phrase before. More importantly, you know that it’s as real as fibromyalgia and restless leg syndrome.

For those of you that don’t know about this horrible affliction, in a nutshell it’s this: A white girl goes missing somewhere in the United States and the national media goes all sex nuts covering it. Not only that, but the local papers and TV stations pick up on it too. And before long, it’s all that everybody you know is liking on Facebook.

But let’s say a black girl goes missing or a hispanic girl, and, well, it’s like crickets on Nancy Grace’s show. It’s like one of the hosts of Fox and Friends farted on camera in the studio. They all just ignore it and act like it didn’t happen, especially when it’s Brian Kilmeade. His are the worst.

The recent controversy surrounding Rush Limbaugh and his comments about Sandra Fluke remind me of this. (He called her a “slut” and a “prostitute,” for those who have forgotten.) I mean, Rush has said thousands of horrible things about a lot of people. In fact, he’s been trading in ebonics and soft-core racial slurs for years and nary a peep is raised by the mainstream media — that is unless it involves, let’s say, an overrated black quarterback.

So why now? So why Sandra Fluke?

Well, for one, this is the year the GOP has apparently chosen to put the nation’s uppity women back in their place. Whether they’re crafting bills requiring doctors to stick an ultrasound wand up a woman’s vagina or they’re proclaiming the immorality of birth control pills, the Republican Party has done it’s best to lose the female vote in November.

Secondly, and this is the kicker, Sandra Fluke is a young white girl. She’s bright. She’s articulate. She’s a good, all-American girl. She could be Wolf Blitzer’s daughter. Or Brian Williams’ girlfriend. Or Rachel Maddow’s hetero-crush. She’s a pure-as-Snow White Disney princess who can do no wrong in her daddy’s eyes.

Now, I’m not defending Rush. He’s a bigoted asshole and an hypocritical pill popper.

Nor do I believe that Sandra Fluke is a slut or a prostitute. I support her.

But I just can’t help but shake the sneaky suspicion that America is upset for all the wrong reasons.
