Today the South Carolina Aquarium announced an initiative with the PNC Foundation to help enhance the aquarium’s early learning program; since 2013, PNC has committed a total of $225,000 to the aquarium’s early learning initiative.

The PNC Foundation forms partnerships with community-based nonprofits within the areas PNC serves to enhance educational opportunities for children.

PNC’s multi-year grant enhances the Rovers distance education program that’s designed to reach toddlers throughout South Carolina and funds Kids Coast, a play-based learning area in the aquarium. The “soft play-area” encourages exploration with peers, promotes learning in a safe environment, and increases the aquarium’s learning opportunities for preschoolers.

S.C. Aquarium president and CEO Kevin Mills says, “We are creating environmental stewards of the future. Now, thanks to this generous gift from PNC, we can reach children earlier than ever to start them down the path of caring for wildlife and wild places.”

The grant also funds the development of a monthly learning series featuring books for toddlers, read by PNC volunteers. This program seeks to provide underserved preschool children with complimentary open-access opportunities.
