Charleston’s gem among troubled schools appears to have been a fraud, as the school district calls for an investigation of startling test scores once thought “improbable” by observers that now seem like they may have been impossible.

Diette Courrege lays out all the clues in a sharp story in today’s Post and Courier. 

I can remember when I first heard about Sanders-Clyde and it’s miracle principal MiShawna Moore. Fittingly, it was from a group of parents touting a school that was doing everything right. Moore was sending meals home, providing laundry service and clothing, opening the school to the community. And the improvements on the test scores were just the icing on the cake.

I was anxious to get in there and do a story, but we were rebuffed several times by the district because of Moore’s timidity with the press.

What’s truly sad about this is that, as Diette notes, the school appears to have improved on the tests, but it’s only standard improvement.

That’s not to say that the energy Moore put in to improving the lives of her students was any less significant or that those kids haven’t benefited from her help.

But their improvement didn’t have to be grand. No one set those expectations. They could have improved at regular levels and the community would have welcomed their success and cherished Moore’s contribution just the same.

But, instead of a celebration, every success that each student has made over the last few years is suspect, whether it’s deserved or not.
