Taste the bicycle rainbow
Saturday afternoon marked the first Lady of the Alleycat urban bike race. Hosted by the Holy City Bike Co-op and promoted as a women-only, high-speed bicycle scavenger hunt, buff babes pedaled all over the peninsula racing between eight widely dispersed checkpoints. Registration started at 3 p.m., and the race kicked off at 4 p.m. with a lap around Colonial Lake, where spirited contestants were given a “manifest” to review plan their attack on the road. There was no set course, and bikers were ordered to obey all traffic laws. Stations included getting your mustache on at the Battery Bandstand, recording outrageous gas prices on the way to Hampton Park, a tricky bike seat slalom at Liberty Square, wrapping up with a sweaty finish line at Magnolia Cemetery. Meow! Post race events included much-deserved drinks at Santi’s and an awards ceremony at the Recovery Room. Katie Mauldin, wheelin’ in at just under 50 minutes, won a sweet six-speed classic cruiser and bicycle jewelry, courtesy of the Bike Co-op.
