PURE Theatre’s Holiday Shorts program has returned to the PURE Theatre stage with some new, festive short plays fresh from the PURE Lab. The Lab is the theater company’s new play program, which helps playwrights develop and stage original works.

The program roster this year features Mary and Joseph at the Hampton Inn by PURE’s playwright-in-residence David Lee Nelson; Christmas Present by PURE Core Ensemble member R.W. Smith; and Waiting for Hermie by PURE co-founder Rodney Lee Rogers.

Two guest playwrights from New York are also included in the lineup: Emily Bohannon, who wrote Leon, and Donnetta Lavinia Grays, who wrote Ground Shipping.

Each piece runs around 15-20 minutes, and stars Miles Boinest, Andie Boyd, Addison Dent, Sharon Graci, Daniel Jones, and Evan Parry. These six actors will switch costumes and roles from play to play. And while the program is definitely holiday-themed, these plays aren’t like your typical heartwarming Christmas movie. “This isn’t A Christmas Carol,” says Nelson. “Christmas is a really complex time of year for a lot of people, and I think these plays have done a really great job of capturing all aspects of the holiday … The good, the bad, and the ugly, or funny.”

Holiday Shorts runs from Dec. 5-27 every Fri. and Sat. at 7:30 p.m., as well as extra shows on Thurs. Dec. 11 and Thurs. Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at puretheatre.org
