What you need to know: President Joe Biden announced a set of sweeping vaccine mandates for federal employees and contractors and health care workers Thursday, while also encouraging governors and other leaders to mandate vaccines for state and local government workers. S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster quickly took to Twitter to express his discontent.

State and community leaders were quick to respond to the tweet, including gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham, who rebutted, “These kinds of ridiculous statements are exactly why we’re still in this mess.”

State Rep. Wendell Gilliard, D-Charleston and Attorney General Alan Wilson also chimed in with official statements and social media remarks.

South Carolina health officials reported 3,917 total cases of COVID-19 Sept. 10, with 2,299 confirmed. A total of 99 new deaths, with 82 confirmed, were also reported Friday.

With 25,558 tests reported, 12.0% were confirmed positive.
