The wildest thing about last weekend’s Southeastern Wildlife Expo was the weather. The apocalyptic conditions kept many away from Friday’s SEWE King Street Stroll, which was new for this year.

Saturday morning’s Dock Dogs competition had a significantly better turnout, although the canine Michael Phelpses had to keep warm with doggie T-shirts. Labs, Chesapeake Bay retrievers, and a German shepherd were judged on the time it took to leap into the water, retrieve a buoy, and return to their stage mom owners (à la Toddlers and Tiaras) screaming, “You want it, Sally!”

The Birds of Prey demonstration was another crowd favorite and luckily, the weather cleared up just in time for the event. The Center for Birds of Prey brought out raptors, a.k.a. hunting birds, including owls, falcons, and eagles. But over at the Gaillard Auditorium, the animals were meant for eating. Chef Bob Waggoner prepared venison tenderloin, which he featured on his show U Cook with Chef Bob, at the “Wild in the Kitchen” demonstration. The game meat was a hit with the many camo-sporting hunters in attendance.
