July 25 will be the last day for Social Restaurant & Wine Bar (188 East Bay St.). Owner Brad Ball says he’s closing the eight-year-old eatery to craft a new Southern-style restaurant.

“The dynamic of this neighborhood has changed drastically,” says Ball, regarding the closure. “We’ve lost our late night. We’ve lost the younger crowd that helped keep the lights on. East Bay now has an older demographic that’s more touristy.” And Ball says the new clientele aren’t interested in what Social has to offer. Instead, they want something more authentically Charleston. “Well be doing something Southern like Poogan’s,” he says of Social’s sister property.

But the wine program Ball, an advanced sommelier, worked so hard to build, earning Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” for the past four, years will remain. “We have a killer wine cellar at Poogan’s and we’ll maintain a small portion of this wine cellar. Both restaurants will have strong beverage programs,” he says.

That said, some of Social’s 4,000 bottles must go. Now through July 25 Social will be offering discounted bottles and wines by the glass, and the last week of business grab-bag bottles will be available. For $75, guests can buy a “Wine Surprise” box. Each box will include three bottles of wine from Social’s cellar and have a retail value worth $75-$175, while supplies last. One lucky buyer may even get a “Wine Surprise” box  worth $250.
