The Charleston County Sheriff’s Department has issued a release regarding traffic on Leeds Avenue and Azalea Drive, where Charleston County absentee voting is currently taking place. Heavy turnouts mean lots of cars in the last hours before election day, and sheriff’s deputies will be directing traffic through the evening.
And not surprisingly, it should be as much of a zoo tomorrow for the real deal. We spoke to Joseph L. Debney, the executive director of the Charleston County Board of Elections and Registration, and he offered a few key words of advice.
Debney wants to remind voters to bring the right forms of identification: an S.C. voter registration card, an S. C. driver’s license, or an S.C. ID issued by Department of Motor Vehicles. He says the best times to vote are after the initial rush, so aim for between 9-11 a.m. or again at 2-4 p.m. (Polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.)
But as far as which precincts will be busiest or how much time voters should give themselves, Debney wasn’t able to guess. “With the presidential election, most of them turn out pretty heavily anyway,” he explains. “Everyone should expect higher turnout tomorrow.”
Debney’s final words of advice: “Just be patient.”
We tried calling Berkeley and Dorchester counties’ election boards, but got busy signals and answering machines. We assume they’re very busy right now.
