[image-1]Lucky 17 Restaurants, owners of Sportsbook of Charleston, 3 Matadors, Creekside Kitchen & Brewhouse, Southside 17, have entered the barbecue business. Today owner Doug Allison opens Southern Roots Smokehouse with business partners Travis Glenn and Jason Marques in Park Circle’s former Barbeque Joint.
After nine years in business, the Barbeque Joint closed its Montague Avenue location back in February and shifted to a catering model operating at 1921 Reynolds Avenue. [content-1] As for the newest cue on the block, Southern Roots Smokehouse has opened its second location at 1083 E. Montague Ave. They’ve given the space a spit shine too and punched out the western end brick wall replacing it with floor-to-ceiling windows to up the curb appeal. There are also now picnic table seating out front in addition to a retro arrow sign reading BBQ. [image-2]According to the restaurant’s website, the menu has all the barbecue standards — plates of plates of pulled pork, brisket, turkey, and chicken in addition to sandwiches and wraps like the smoke house medley of brisket, pork, slaw, and pico as well as brisket tacos. One thing not on the menu that fans of the former Barbeque Joint may miss:hash. Sides that are available include collards, mashed potatoes, baked beans, potato salad, and mac ‘n’ cheese.
“We’ll also sell shrimp baskets,” says Allison. Southern Roots uses local shrimper Mikel Glenn’s shrimp. “We won’t just have barbecue. We’ll have a burger as well. I wanted to call it Southern Roots Smokehouse And More because we’re trying to make it family friendly and serve many genres of food.”
