Johnny Pieper, head distiller of Striped Pig, knows there’s an interest in making liquor. He used to teach two-day courses at Downslope Distilling in Colorado, which is why he’s devised a curriculum The Art of Distillation for a Sat. April 26, 10 a.m.-3 p.m class at Striped Pig in North Charleston.

“It serves a couple different purposes. First off, in no way do we ever promote home distilling. That’s heavily illegal,” says Pieper. “This class is for people who are interested in maybe starting their own distillery or just want to get an intro level class on the craft spirits process. There’s no experience necessary.”

In addition to the craft curious, Pieper is also hoping to attract bartenders. “I’m gearing this class towards the foot soldiers of the liquor industry. Those mixologists who are interested in learning more about the art of craft spirits and how to produce them,” he says. April 25’s class has a cap of 20 students and those interested must register by Wed. April 23. It’s $110 per person and lunch — and multiple tastings throughout the day — will be provided. To register, call (843) 276-3201 or email info@stripedpigdistillery.com.
