Since its start in 2003, Summerville Orchestra has grown from a handful of founding members playing just for fun into a group of 70 or so instrumentalists participating in full-scale concerts.
To give back to the community, various members of the orchestra perform free chamber music concerts as part of its “Encore Series” at Summerville cafe, Coastal Coffee Roasters. The next concert, “Solos and Strings” will be held at 7 p.m., March 19.
“Every time we do it at the coffee shop it’s something different,” said S.O. music director, Wojciech Milewski. “It could be outside or in the warehouse — there’s no set structure to it. Sometimes we have jazz, sometimes we have rock. Sometimes it’s two musicians, sometimes it’s 12.”
On March 19, clarinetist Niko Stem and trumpetist Ethan Pruitt and Milewski on piano will be joining the S.O. string quartet for a performance of pieces from classic names, Mozart and Bach, to a wild car contemporary piece called “On the Nature of Daylight” featured in the movie, Arrival, written by modern German-American composer Max Richter in 2004.
“It’s a 7-person group hybrid event — modern music, movie music, classical traditional pieces — a multi-faceted chamber music event; a lighthearted, casual affair where you can sip some wine, beer or coffee,” Milewski said.
