The Lee Brothers have teamed up with the Department of Agriculture’s Certified S.C. program to promote local food. To that end, they held a contest over the summer to give someone an opportunity to have their supper club “Lee Brothered.”

The winner of Lee Brother Your Supper Club was Nora Kravec, a local who works for Coastal Conservation League. Ted Lee joked on Sunday that it could’ve been anyone in all of South Carolina. “We could easily have been cooking for 12 in a kitchen in Round O,” he said. Lucky for them, the winner was right here on the coast and she turned out to be pretty well connected too.

A member of the Ambrose Farms CSA, Kravec asked Pete and Babs Ambrose if they’d be willing to host the party on their amazing property in Rockville at the tip of Wadmalaw. Being the generous and humble folks that they are, the Ambroses threw open their home, and Kravec invited what appeared to be the entire staff of CCL for a lovely evening of local food on the water. As hors d’oeuvres were passes and oysters were shucked, guests were treated to scuppernong sangrias and cactus pear cosmos.

Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers gave an opening speech and announced a couple more Lee Brother promotions, including a tailgate party at the Clemson-Carolina game.

After the announcements and pleasantries (and an admission that the Lee boys brought in back-up in the form of Robert Stehling of Hominy Grill), the guests made a beeline for the buffet line. On the table was an impressive array of local fare, from MiBek beef tenderloin to wreckfish caught right off of Wadmalaw. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’d have to say the Manchester Farms quail sliders (made from boneless quail) was a clever and delicious way to serve the tiny fowl.

The next Lee Brothers contest — “Lee Brother Your Holiday” — is already underway. Share your favorite holiday recipe (using Certified S.C. products) and upload it to their Facebook page. Winners will travel to the State Farmers Market in Columbia in January, and the Lee Brothers will prepare all five winning recipes.
