When I spoke to Thomas Ravenel a few years back for the City Paper’s 15th anniversary issue, the one-time state treasurer and star of Bravo’s Southern Charm said that he would return to politics if two things happened. One, the drug laws in this nation, and South Carolina, would have to change. And two, he would have to settle down and start a family.
Well, in case you didn’t notice it, the drugs laws are changing fast. In fact, state Rep. Todd Rutherford (D-Columbia) just introduced a medical marijuana bill while Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort) hopes to legalize a medicinal cannabinoid.
As for starting a family, the trailer for Southern Charm seems to indicate that there may be a little T-Rav on the way. When I recently asked Ravenel if the rumors of a little baby Ravy were true, this is what he said:
I’m just not talking about that aspect of my personal life right now. I will say I’ve been spending more time that usual focusing on the status of America’s failed government-run education system just in case a sparkle in my eye does become the next generation of Ravenels. We have to scrap that system and start over, putting the power of the marketplace to work for all of our children.
Make of that what you will. But considering that Ravenel has already stated that he will throw his hat into the ring if Lindsey Graham wins the Republican primary for his U.S. Senate seat, I’d like to think that T-Rav will soon be knee-deep in baby diapers and T-T-Rav — at the very least to experience a little bit of the pain that so many of us feel.
