Louisiana guitarist/vocalist Tab Benoit specializes in old-school Cajun blues — soulful, spicy stuff from the deep Bayou blended with elements of Texas-style blues-rock and vintage New Orleans funk.
On his 2007 album Power of the Pontchartrain (Telarc), the veteran blues man worked with veteran producer David Z (Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Prince). His latest collection, Night Train to Nashville (Telarc), features a wild mix of boogie (“Muddy Bottom Blues,” featuring Wet Willie’s Jimmy Hall), and low-down Cajun flavor (“Fever for the Bayou,” with guest Jumpin’ Johnny Sansome on the accordion).
Benoit recently received the Blues Music Association Award for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year, a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album, and Blues Music Association nominations in 2007 for Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Backed on this tour by blues/rock/pop group Louisiana Leroux (a Gulf Coast mainstay since the late ’70s), he appears to be one of the brightest stars in the contemporary Southern blues scene. Two sets are planned for this early show (doors open at 8 p.m.). See charlestonpourhouse.com and tabbenoit.com for more.
