On July 25, the Charleston Wine Traveler throws down a “Cocktail Challenge” sponsored by Cabana Cachaça, 28 Bridgeside Events, and, get this: Grills Gone Wild. Eight of the city’s top bartenders, from posh spots such as Sienna, Chai’s, Coast, McCrady’s, Oak Steakhouse, Social, Tristan, and the Thoroughbred Club will be mixing and competing to win a trip to Cabana Cachaça headquarters. While the barkeeps are busy practicing mixology, the guests will be tasting and rating drinks made with Cabana Cachaça, which is “a double-distilled sugar cane rum made in São Paulo,” a region known for the best sugarcane in the world. Not to be confused with Dixie Crystals. This event sold out last year, so you better RSVP quick. —Liz Robinson NEXT WEDNESDAY

It’s shrimp season, and the local crustaceans make for a perfect summertime meal, especially when paired with the right wine. Old Village Post House Chef Tim Armstrong will create three courses, pairing a particular shrimp dish with a matching wine, chosen by Patrick Emerson, Maverick Southern Kitchen’s wine and beverage director. The second course is probably our favorite because it features a sugarcane-skewered shrimp with a tangy plum glaze, served with Monchhof Mosel State Spatlese Riesling, Germany 2005. Nothing quite like a fine meal with all the work done for you. Reservations are required, but the $68 per head includes tax and gratuity, so you’ll only need to tip the taxi driver for the ride home. —Liz Robinson NEXT WEDNESDAY
