In 2006, CP food critic Jeff Allen had his first taste of Jen and Mike Kulick’s Duck Club Sandwich at Marie Laveau’s. In his review, he described it as “a thing of profound beauty, generously layers of confit between substantial grilled bread and smoked cheddar cheese, reinforced with extra-thick slabs of crispy fried bacon, dripping with succulent fat (one can never have too much fat in a confit sandwich).”

The sandwich became an instant classic, but it didn’t help save Marie Laveau’s from shuttering a year later. A slider version of the sandwich could still be found at the Kulicks’ tiki bar, Voodoo, in West Ashley, but the mini version just isn’t the same.

Fast forward to 2010, and the beloved duck club has resurfaced on the menu of the Kulicks’ newest restaurant: the Tattooed Moose. Of course, it’s a little bit pricier than it was back in 2006, but hey, you can’t have fresh Normandy Farm bread and three layers of duck confit without paying for it, right?

The Tattooed Moose officially opened for business today, Tuesday, March 9, and we here at the City Paper couldn’t be more excited. It’s a block away from our offices in the old Miss Kitty’s Fine Foods location. The Kulicks have brought their signature style to the modest little storefront, darkening up the paneled walls and mounting a beautiful moosehead behind the bar. Some comfy tables and booths, a couple of pinball machines (Addams Family and NASCAR), and plenty of craft beer choices promise that the Tattooed Moose will quickly become an attractive watering hole for the neighborhood. Or at least for the City Paper staffers.

I stopped by for a quick lunch today, and after joking with the entire staff of West Of (community newspaper in West Ashley) about them being on our turf, ordered a massive Chokin’ Chicken sandwich while my lunch date decided to build his own ham and cheese sammie.

UPDATE: The menu has a list of creative specialty sandwiches — and they’ve already started making tweaks since they opened on Monday. The most significant being lower prices and a slimmed down specialty sandwich menu.

 The menu starts with the aforementioned duck club ($13.50) and has creations like “Beef on Weck ($8.50),” thinly sliced roast beef served on a “Weck” kaiser bun dipped in au jus. Apparently, it’s a sandwich famous in Buffalo, NY. The Turducken ($11.75) piles on duck, turkey, and chicken with dijonaisse, pickles, and andouille sausage pâté. Then there are things like reubens ($9.25), hot pastramis ($8.75), and the Southside ($9.50), a meat-astic hoagie stuffed with cappicola, mortadella, hard salami, and provolone with the requisite oil, vinegar, and oregano.

The Chokin’ Chicken starts with a Normandy Farm roll with roasted chicken, smoked gruyere, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion and a slammin’ housemade artichoke-lemon-ricotta spread. Very tasty and very big. I brought the uneaten half back to the office to share.

The rest of the menu is dedicated to build-it-yourself sandwiches, classic deli style. Choose your meat ($8) and then pile it on the bread of your choice with cheese, veggies, and condiments. It’s extra for additions like garlic aioli, sauerkraut, bacon, goat cheese, and such.

They are also encouraging patrons to make their own sandwiches. If yours gets picked to be a weekly special, you get one free.

The Tattooed Moose is open every day from 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m. They’ll serve lunch, dinner, and Sun. brunch. Happy hour is every day from 4-7 p.m. and features $1.50 PBRs, $2 bottles of a good selection of domestic beer, $10 buckets of Moosehead, $6 pitchers of Miller High Life, and lots more discounts. They’ll be adding live music soon too.

 And I don’t know if this was on the original menu, but it’s totally catching my eye on the revised lineup: Jen’s Chocolate and Cinammon Bread Pudding. Yum.
