This week, pop superstar Taylor Swift announced the opening act for the North American leg of her 2011 Speak Now world tour: the S.C.-based quartet Needtobreathe. The tour will begin May 27 in Omaha, Nebraska. The nearest show to Charleston is a concert in Charlotte on July 8.

“It means a lot to us that Taylor handpicked us for her Speak Now tour,” Needtobreathe guitarist Bo Rinehart said in a recent press statement. “Everyone knows she has amazing fans, and we thrive on performing live, especially in front of new audiences.”

The Palmetto State alt-rock band — fronted by singer, guitarist, and main songwriter Bear Rinehart — recently release a well-polished studio album titled The Outsiders. They’ve stayed busy this year, touring North America, the U.K., and Europe, and winning several Dove awards (the contemporary Christian equivalent of the Grammys), including one for 2010’s group of the year.
