CONSERVATION: A controversial purchase surrounding Angel Oak Park is back on the agenda at City Council. Mayor Joe Riley wants to buy 6.5 acres of the proposed development around Angel Oak Park. The $518,000 the city hopes to use to pay for the land would come from its share of the county’s Greenbelt money.

The purchase has raised concerns among preservationists because the owners had already promised to conserve that portion of the project as part of the development agreement. The mayor has argued that the site could be sold and a new owner would not be beholden to that promise.

City Council will also consider approval for new district boundaries in advance of November’s elections. Any approved plan will have to go before the U.S. Justice Department for approval.

The council meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 80 Broad Street.

SCHOOLS: The Charleston County School Board is expected to vote tonight on whether to sell the Archer and Frasier campuses. Archer was closed years ago and used for swing space while the district built the new Sanders Clyde Elementary. Frasier students were also relocated once the new school was completed. The School Board meets tonight at 5:15 p.m. at the district office, 75 Calhoun St.

There had been some talk of donating Frasier to the city to be used as a police training center, but that appears to have been abandoned. While Archer isn’t in an area expected to see much growth, Frasier sits on a large lot across from Trident Tech’s Palmer Campus and the proposed Cigar Factory redevelopment.

LIBRARIES: The Charleston County Public Library is hosting six public meetings to talk about charting the future of the library system. Each meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., beginning tonight at Dorchester Road Regional, 6325 Dorchester Road, and Mt. Pleasant Regional, 1133 Mathis Ferry Road.

Following meeting will be Tuesday at Otranto Road Regional, 2261 Otranto; Wednesday at St. Andrews Regional, 1735 N. Woodmere Drive; and Thursday at the Main Library, 68 Calhoun St., and John’s Island Regional, 3531 Maybank Highway.
