Bridge Ran – The 36th annual Cooper River Bridge Run attracted more than 38,700 participants to downtown Charleston this weekend for the 10,000 meter run. 27-year old Kenyan Simon Ndirangu took the men’s title and Ethiopian Hiwot Ayalew came away with the women’s division. Race reports are that the massive run went off nearly without a hitch, despite chilly weather to start the morning. Husband and wife racers Ilana and Alex Dupont won the race’s men’s and women’s wheelchair dvision.
Busy weekend – Not to be outdone by the Bridge Run, the Charleston area also played host to a number of other events this weekend. the Lowcountry Cajun Festival on James Island attracted a record-number of folks, Summerville’s Flowertown Festival enjoyed nice weather for the popular three-day annual event benefiting the Summerville Family YMCA, and Serena Williams came back after dropping the first set against Jelena Jankovic to capture her third Family Circle Cup title.
Colbert Busch goes to Washington – 1st District nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch continues to build her campaign against Mark Sanford, announcing a high-profile fundraiser in Washington, D.C. that will feature her comedian brother as well as help from some big-league names in Congress, including N.Y. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and M.N. Sen. Amy Klobuchar as well as Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. Though the event is comfortably within the Beltway, there’s already talk of the moves signaling interest in South Carolina’s early 2016 presidential primary. Colbert Busch is continuing to attract national media attention, with New York Times, Washington Post, and Roll Call giving her an underdog’s chance in the race against Sanford.
