Darius Rucker Blvd? – North Charleston will consider whether to change the name of Coliseum Dr. (Patch) near the North Charleston Coliseum to Darius Rucker Boulevard—Rucker’s mother still owns a home in North Charleston. Rucker’s band Hootie and the Blowfish already has Hootie Boulevard (WIS) named in its honor in Five Points in Columbia.
2013 Session – The State looks at how ethics reform died in the Statehouse during this year’s legislative session despite significant pressure to pass proposals. Inaction during the session (P&C) also could leave five Charleston airport board members in limbo.
District 42 – The State’s Buzz column takes stock of who’s in and who’s out in the special election to replace former State Sen. Robert Ford. Charleston lawmakers Reps. Seth Whipper and Wendell Gilliard are said to be considering making a run for the seat. Ford has endorsed SCSU board member Maurice Washington.
Burbage’s – After a prospective buyer for Burbage’s Self Serve Grocery abandoned plans to take over the beloved Broad St. corner store last week, the store “faces question of life or legacy,” as P&C’s Brian Hicks writes.
Nancy Mace for Senate? – An op-ed critical of Sen. Lindsey Graham penned by the Citadel’s first female graduate, Nancy Mace, made the rounds late last week. Mace is widely speculated to be considering a Republican primary challenge to Graham and has made herself one of his most visible critics back in his home state.
McConnell vs. Sellers – The 2014 race for state lieuntenant governor is shaping up interestingly (The State), pitting current Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, a Republican from Charleston, against Orangeburg State Rep. Bakari Sellers. Sellers is the son of noted civil rights activist Cleveland Sellers and McConnell has a penchant for dressing up as a Confederate soldier and has co-owned a Civil War memorabilia shop.
SCGOP’s Connelly quits – Motivational speaker and State Republican Party Chair Chad Connelly resigned his post Saturday (AP) to take a job with the RNC. Matt Moore, who previously served as the party’s executive director before leaving to be Sen. Tim Scott’s state director, will replace Connelly.
Citadel/Reville – The Citadel says it’s following recommendations laid out in a report earlier this year designed to help the campus adjust in the aftermath of former Citadel counselor Skip ReVille’s conviction on child molestation charges.
6 years after Sofa Super Store fire – The mother of one of the nine firefighters killed in the Sofa Super Store fire of 2003 says the city should do more (P&C) to improve the memorial to the incident, which occupies the site where the store once stood along Hwy. 17 in West Ashley.
