Restaurants on Obamacare – The P&C looks at how the Affordable Care Act will affect large restauranteurs in the Charleston area as provisions require employers to provide health benefits to full-time F&B workers who traditionally have not been offered benefits.
State growth centered on coast – New Census data (AP) shows that while the state has shown about 2% growth since 2010, some of the fastest growth in the nation is centered along the state’s coastline, with growth above 6% in Mount Pleasat and Berkeley County and about 4.3% growth in Charleston and North Charleston.
Crisis Ministries – Carol Libby, the CFO of Crisis Ministries, was brought up on charges (P&C) of embezzling nearly $100,000 from the nonprofit homeless shelter. Though shaken, group officials say they’re continuing to work (CP) to fulfill the mission of the shelter and raising money to expand future operations.
Paris Air Show – The state is sending a smaller delegation (AP) to this year’s Paris Air Show, where Commerce department officials (P&C) wine and dine aerospace industry movers and shakers in hopes of drumming up economic development in the state. Last year, the Haley administration caught media flak for what was portrayed as a luxurious junket overseas. The governor is not making the trip this year.
Aquaoir – Mira Winery, which aged a case of Cabernet Sauvignon at the bottom of the Charleston Harbor earlier this year, is releasing a dozen of the 48 bottles (ABC News 4) as part of a $500 wine club package.
Navy Midshipmen in town – A group of four Naval Academy ships(AP) will sail into the Charleston Harbor today as the Midshipmen sail down the coast on an offshore developmental program. The four ships, three at the Maritime Center and one at Patriot’s Point, will be available for visit this weekend.
SC child welfare – The New York Times profiles South Carolina’s child welfare system, as the state mounts its own investigation into the system and a new lawsuit alleges a specific incident of abuse that went untreated.
TBonz group changes its name – Tbonz Restaurant Group is now the Homegrown Hospitality Group (CRBJ) as of last month.
