State lawmakers and the governor were never told about the existence of the report, the contents of which are unknown, but which could have shed light on the inner workings of the project financed with S.C. taxpayer and SCE&G customer money. Daniel Island state Rep. Jim Merrill resigned Thursday night, a day before he was set to appear in court related to corruption charges leveled against him. Today, he is reportedly pleading guilty to one charge of ‘statutory misconduct’ in what appears to be a wide-ranging plea agreement as prosecutors continue digging into Statehouse corruption. Earlier this week, Charleston County Council voted to move ahead with discussions to potentially settle a suit between the owner of the abandoned Naval hospital in North Charleston and the County, which signed a 25-year lease that it ended up scrapping, alleging the building owners didn’t make-good on pledges to improve it.
